Digital Game ArticlesGetting past the World of Warcraft: part 3

Curtis Johnson

article thumbnaiPlaying with other people is the hallmark of internet gaming, and playing against those people is its pinnacle. Tapping into this, one of the most appealing aspects of World of Warcraft was that it granted the player the ability to take the fight between the Horde and Alliance to a more personal level. Developing a system to take advantage of that conflict has consumed much of Blizzards...

Media HordeThe Truth about the Truth(SG1)

article thumbnaiI am often disappointed with the quality of DVD some movies try to thrust on their viewers.  With the multi-teared format that DVD allows, publishers can easily seem lazy.  The sheer lack of well rounded content in modern releases is somewhat disheartening.  Back in the days of VHS we expected to get a movie and nothing else.  It was a rare treat to get a little extra content...

article thumbnai When I gather the resolve to hark back to the days of ink and paper storytelling, I prefer to be in it for the long haul.  I read the occasional single book adventure, but I feel like epic is the best way to go when it comes to fiction.  This approach has been known to rear around and bite me from time to time, namely Douglas Adam’s “Dirk Gently” Series, which...

In light as that there are no letters yet I thought I would talk about a theme that has been playing on my mind for the past few days.

As a gamer I like to think of myself as a well rounded player that is open to differnet gaming experiences.  But I have had to face the fact that I am, by nature, not a compedative gamer.  I am a communal gamer.

I like games that have players work together towards a common goal or at the very least treat the game as a game rather than singular obsession.  I have one deck of Magic Cards, and one in the works.  I have them so I can play against others, but winning really isn't my goal.  Just playing.

Mind you, I do have a compedative side.  I have met him, and he's a jerk to put it mindly.  Which is why I don't invoke him much.  I call him Evil Mike for a reason.

So if when you submit letters to the editor, and if I am the one responding, my advice will trend towards how to enjoy the game rather than dominate it.  Occational Evil Mike will get a word in but I hope to enrich your gaming life through my advice as a whole.

Bah! Another "feel good" gamer.
Most gamers I know play to win.
Yeah, it is fun to roll dice, but it is even more fun to win.

I paraphrase a quote from a movie every gamer knows.

Conan what is the best thing in life.
"To eliminate my enemy gamers, stack thier character sheets in front of me, and listen to the lamentation of their women."

Now say Callliforrrrnia...

HAH!
